An Estimator is responsible for preparing scopes and estimates for remodeling and repair services. An estimator’s primary responsibilities are to scope work, create estimates using pre-established worksheet templates, and securing the project. An estimator’s duties include fieldwork to acquire a comprehensive understanding of New Prairie’s operations on job sites, standard techniques, and best practices.

PREFERRED and REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent industry experience (Required)
- Experience in remodeling industry (Required)
- Experience with writing estimates, proof of work provided at interview (Required)
- Industry certifications (Preferred), or willingness to participate in courses to gain industry certifications (Required)
COMPETENCY – KNOWLEDGE, SOFT-SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Familiarity with construction and remodeling projects; as well as familiarity with essential carpentry skills
- Knowledge of methods, and equipment used in carpentry; as well as familiarity with common power and hand tools.
- Knowledge of building codes and regulations; as well as knowledge of and familiarity with job site safety rules and regulations (OSHA).
- Knowledge of computer systems and applications (Excel, Adobe, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) including comprehensive computer literacy such as the ability to operate office equipment (scanner, printer, phone system, computers); in addition to typing ability – average 30-40 words per minute.
- Customer Service skills; communication skills and the ability to professionally answer and communicate with customers over the phone and face to face.
- Strong math skills; as well as, strong critical thinking skills.
- Professional administration skills; as well as the ability to maintain client information confidentiality.
- Both the ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to coordinate multiple jobs within the same time frame with attention to details.
- Regularly move between customer job sites, both indoors and outdoors; this includes climbing up and down ladders, maneuvering through attics and crawl spaces, and lifting up to 50 lbs most days.
- Additionally, ensure the safe operation of a company vehicle, when needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meet with homeowners to conduct onsite inspections and work-scope generation.
- Complete estimates within 2 weeks of assignment.
- Accurately estimate labor costs and materials, while maintaining accountability for job profitability
- Assisting in the ordering and procurement of materials needed for projects.
- Meet all service standards set forth by the client and the company.
- Estimate each job using estimating software, train on software as needed.
- Work closely with interested parties to obtain contracts and close opportunities.
- Understanding and honoring customer requirements.
- Ensure each project achieves a minimum gross profit margin as determined by company standards.
- Communicate and document any change orders and add-work supplements.
- Build and maintain business relationships with vendors, subcontractors and colleagues
- Maintaining contact with homeowners when participating in estimates.
- Maintaining contact with homeowners throughout the duration of the job.
- Maintaining contact with carpenters, vendors and subcontractors throughout the duration of the job.
- Managing and/or working with subcontractors
- Managing peers (dividing job tasks, working as a team)
- Occasionally training apprentices and/or colleagues
- Occasionally attend classes and/or workshops related to job duties
- Recommending job improvements, alternative methods, etc. (problem solve)
- Maintain a professional appearance.
- All other job duties as assigned within reason.
